Richard I was King of England from 1189 to 1199. The troubadour king was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion. Richard spent of his reign away from England, since the larger part of his realm was in France. He took part in the Third Crusade and afterwards a period under arrest by Leopold V of Austria. Captain Robert Falcon Scott, was a Royal Naval officer and Antarctic explorer and the most famous, and tragic, hero of Antarctic Exploration. Cardinal Newman was an English convert to Roman Catholicism and later made a cardinal. In 1991 he was proclaimed 'Venerable'. Early on in his life he was a main figure in the Oxford Movement to return the Church of England to its Catholic roots. In due course his studies in history convinced him to become a Roman Catholic. A statue honouring William Huskisson, an MP for Liverpool and former President of the Board of Trade. He stepped across the tracks when Stephenson's the Rocket, the first steam engine, bore down on him. Huskisson fell just as the engine was upon him. His leg was crushed by the wheels of the locomotive and the accident proved fatal. Video by author Brian Kavanagh.
George V was the first British sovereign belonging to the House of Windsor, which he created from the British branch of the German House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He was King of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth countries as well as the Emperor of India and the first King of the Irish Free State. George reigned through World War I.
